הספר מוצג כתרגום בכמה רמות.
לפי המסופר בו, מדובר בטקסט עתיק שנכתב בשפת הברהמים, נמצא ע"י חכם סיני בן התקופה, שתירגם אותו לסינית. איש אנגליה ששהה במזרח תרגמו לאנגלית ושלחו לידידו באנגליה, וכך התגלגל לידי אובן אשר תרגמו לעברית.

למעשה, הספר נכתב ע"י סופר אנגלי,
Robert Dodsley (1703 - 1764)
דמות מרכזית בסצינה הספרותית בלונדון במאה ה- 18. לפי רודרמן (עמ' 95), היה זה אחד הספרים הפופולריים ביותר באנגליה בכל המאה ה- 18 (יותר מ- 200 מהדורות בין 1750 - 1800, תורגם גם לשפות שונות).

על "מקורו" המזרחי (מטיבט) של הטקסט ראו דברי המכתב שצורף לספר, שנכתב ע"י האיש האלמוני ששלח את החיבור לידידו באנגליה.

לפי אותו סיפור, לא ידוע מי מחברו של הטקסט. באותו מכתב שהוזכר אף עולה ספק לגבי מקורו העתיק:

the plan of it which is entirely new to the eastern people, and so unlike any thing they have ever seen, that, if it was not for some turns of expression peculiar to the East, and the impossibility of accounting for its being written in this very ancient language, many would suppose it to be the work of an European. (p. 9)

זהו <ins>ספר מוסר</ins> הנובע כביכול מתרבות המזרח, וליתר דיוק מכתביו של חכם הודי עתיק. למעשה הוא מציג את רעיונותיו <ins>הדאיסטים</ins> של מחבר אנגלי בן תקופתו של ונאובן (ראו חלון "תרגום"). לפי השערותיו של ונאובן בהקדמתו, ייתכן כי כל החכמה הזו לא נובעת אלא מן היהדות עצמה: "כאשר חטא ישראל ונגלה מעל אדמתו... חכמת חכמיו ובינת נבוניו תסתר בגנזי אוצרותם ובחדרי משכיותם כל הגוים ללשונותם מילידי הר"פה העתיקו מהם מלין ונקראו על שמם ומאלה נפוצו על פני כל הארץ בלשון אחרת ידברו ובלעגי שפה הלא נודע כי באו אל קרבנה מילדי העברים כאשר ישפוט הקורא בזה הספר אשר העתקתי..." אחד הפרקים עוסק בהתנהגות ההולמת את <ins>הנשים</ins>, וביחס ההולם של <ins>הבעל כלפי אשתו</ins>.
