סטנוב מציין בהקדמה את רצונו להוציא את ספר המדות של אריסטו במהדורה חדשה שכן הוא לא ניתן להשגה כמעט, ומתאר את הקשיים שניתקל בהם כדי להשיג את העותק שבו השתמש לצורך העבודה על המהדורה החדשה. לטענתו, התרגום של ר' יוסף ברבינו ש"ט "מלאה שיבושים ובלי הפסקים והנה עשיתי הפסקים וגם הוספתי גירסות חדשות מדעתי ואת הישנות לא הסירותי..."

בהקדמה מספר סטנוב כי הפציר במשה מנדלסון לתרגם מחדש את ספר המדות ומנדלסון אף נעתר לכך, אך לא הספיק לעשות זאת:
וכבר דברתי עם החכם המפורסם הרב מו' משה דעסוי אודות מעלת זה הספר וידבר בו נכבדות ואמר שבכל החבורים שחבר אריסטו אין שלם ומועיל כמוהו, אז אמרתי הנה מקום אתי לדבר עמו על דבר ההעתקה שיעתיקהו בלשון צח אשר תבונה בו, כי ידעתי את האיש ואת שיחו שהי' מכיר ויודע לדבר בשפת עמים רבים ... ובפרט בשלש אלה הלשונות עברי יוני ורומי, ואבקשה ממנו על זאת וייטיב הדבר בעיניו, ויאמר בהניח ה' לי אשים את לבי עליו להעתיקו כיד ה הטובה עלי, אבל מה נעשה כי הזמן **** לא נתנו לשלם את נדרו...
